PrideFest Happened!

blog post photo

After months of delay to our typical June event, PrideFest has finally happened. It was a beautiful weekend, that was met with much positivity from the crowd of around 10,000 Pride revelers, spread over both days. Saturday night's street party was a raging success, capped off with headliner Thea Austin's exuberant personality, catchy dance music and confetti canons that shot off from the stage.

The Pride parade on Sunday was the largest in Des Moines' history with over 70 entrants and close to 400 marchers. The community festival that followed the parade had food, beverage, merchandise and corporate vendors and thousands of people celebrating LGBT pride. Sunday's festival was brought to a close by headliner Frenchie Davis with the crowd demanding an encore.

We are continuing to plan for the 2009 PrideFest event, scheduled for the second weekend of June. There was overwhelming feedback from those that attended this rare October PrideFest for a yearly fall event. The planning committee is considering options for a fall event, separate from PrideFest.

We wish to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and countless others that helped to make this year's postponed PrideFest a big success!

Our next planning committee meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2008. Please click here for location and more info. We will hold elections and resume our annual meeting.

FIRST ANNUAL IOWA PRIDE INSTITUTE: Part 2

Please Join Us for the

FIRST ANNUAL IOWA PRIDE INSTITUTE: Part 2

Hosted by

Iowa Pride Network and Capital City Pride

WHO: Leaders of Iowa’s LGBT & Allied Organizations

WHEN: Friday, October 3, 2008; 9:00 AM-4:00 PM

WHERE: Des Moines Public Library, Room 2, 1000 Grand Avenue, Des Moines

Parking: Locust Mall Ramp (8th St. & Locust; $7.75 daily)

MISSION:

The Iowa Pride Institute is designed to serve as a catalyst for collaboration by bringing the leaders of Iowa’s LGBT and Allied organizations together to discuss challenges, issues and ideas facing Iowa’s LGBT community and developing proactive strategies to advance our cause of equality and respect.

In June, despite the flooding, the Institute hosted over 15 local and statewide organizations who participated in our Round Table Discussion! From that conversation areas of opportunities and weaknesses were identified; such as:

Weakness: Lack of coordinated event dates and the need for a statewide calendar for events.

Opportunity: The Eychaner Foundation has stepped up and has created an online resource and calendar for Iowa’s LGBT and Allied organizations (http://www.glbtiowa.com/).

Weakness: The need for funding for Iowa’s LGBT organizations.

Opportunity: Participants who attend in October will have the opportunity to participate in a round-table discussion with LGBT Leaders to develop fundraising strategies to support the work of LGBT communities in Iowa.

Weakness: Iowa’s LGBT organizations lack coordinated media plans.

Opportunity: Participants who attend in October will hear from Sarah Kennedy, Media Field Strategist for GLAAD, who will lead a session on how to get your organization’s message in the media.

The Institute’s goal of serving as a catalyst for collaboration is already yielding results for Iowa’s LGBT movement, but there is much more to do. As a way to improve the Institute, we have created an online survey for participating organizations to assess the current state of our movement. Using these results, we will be able to better tailor our round-table discussion and break-out sessions. Please go here to take the survey: IOWA PRIDE INSTITUTE 2008

We would love to have you join us for this conversation.

Please RSVP no later than September 26, 2008 as space is limited to 50 participants!

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to help strengthen Iowa’s LGBT Movement!

RSVP to ryan@iowapridenetwork.org or call 515-371-8355.

Domestic Partner Vs Girlfriend

A couple of days ago over dinner, some friends and I started discussing the term "domestic partner." I've noticed in the past year that many people assume that my girlfriend and I are domestic partners just because we're living together. I appreciate their recognition of our relationship, don't get me wrong. I disagree, however, with how they automatically apply "domestic partnership" to our relationship. I introduce Meredith, my girlfriend, as" my girlfriend." Meredith once noted that she was introduced by one of her good friends as, "This is Meredith. Her partner's name is Stacy." The term "domestic partnership," to me, implies marriage (without all the rights in some states, and no, this is not going to be a discussion of gay marriage). And although Meredith and I have been living together for over three years, we're not ready to take the next step to partnership bliss. Nor are we casually dating. It seems as if same-sex couples have been forced to choose between casual dating and domestic partnership. We have nothing against domestic partnerships or marriage, for that matter, but it's just not for us at the moment. Why can't she be my girlfriend who lives with me?

On a side note, if any of you are wondering about the origin of the term "domestic partnership," check out Wikipedia's entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_partnership

Homophobia

I like Wikipedia, I use it often. I stumbled across this wiki in regards to homophobia and found it interesting. With all the links, it took me nearly an hour to read what I wanted on the site. I especially like the picture of Fred Phelps to the right, looks dashing doesn't he?

Gender identity spectrum

I think we have all heard of the book "Mens are from Mars, Women are from Venus" that discusses the communication style and emotional needs of the opposite gender, mostly in relation to husbands and wives. I was left to wonder if these views were based on stereotypes or research. There certainly is a concrete division between the sexes in the book. Men. Women. No in between. Where does this leave transgender individuals or intersex? Genderqueer and intergender are catchall terms for gender identities other than man and woman.

Gender follows more of a spectrum, and is up to each individual as to how one identifies. I respect my neighbor's gender identity and know that it's not a choice.

Lots of comments on our Des Moines Register blog!

Check out our new Des Moines Register blog and be sure to read the comments! We are being moved from Des Moines Juice's site to a new place and have set up an account with the Register. After posting two of our blogs on their site, we were amazed by the amount of negative response about homosexuality and gay marriage here in Iowa. At the same time, we have some really great responses in our favor.

Transgender inclusion in the workplace

Just saw this topic on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) website. Transgender rights oftentimes get lumped together with gay and lesbian rights, and more often are ignored altogether. Check out this article.

CNN Video about Gay Christians in Nigeria

An MCC (Metropolitan Community Churches) church in Nigeria was featured on CNN last week. Historically, MCC has ministered primarily to the LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer) community and was founded by Rev. Elder Troy Perry. MCC has established churches around the world, with most being located in the United States.

Check out the video of this story and see how this particular congregation is offering hope in the midst of oppression and standing up to societal and governmental anti-gay pressures.

While Capital City Pride does not endorse any religious organization, we do watch the news and are supportive of those organizations that are helping to promote human rights around the world.

Quelling rumors and gossip

I don’t think that any group or organization is immune to the havoc caused by gossip and rumors. It’s certainly not new to Hollywood celebrities and those that read the tabloids on the grocery store shelves. And it’s not new to our group. What can we do about it? We cannot control others and cannot expect to change someone else’s opinion. However, we can work really hard to promote the truth. So there it is, truth. I try very hard to speak the truth and to earn the respect of my peers in doing so. I think that Albus Dumbledore said it best (er, um… J.K. Rowling from the Harry Potter series). I will paraphrase… There is the right way and the easy way. Choose wisely.

Capital City Pride Announces October Dates for PrideFest 2008

Des Moines, Iowa, July 8, 2008 - Capital City Pride has announced Saturday, October 4 as the date for the PrideFest Street Party in the Historic East Village and Sunday, October 5 for the annual PrideFest Parade, followed by the community festival at Simon Estes amphitheater.

The annual PrideFest typically takes place the second weekend of June, however, due to the worsening flooding situation in Des Moines that week, Capital City Pride, in consultation with Des Moines authorities, decided to postpone PrideFest 2008 events until fall. All available city resources were needed for emergency preparations. Capital City Pride had previously announced dates for PrideFest to take place in September. The September dates were chosen based on information available to Capital City Pride at that time. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Capital City Pride has rescheduled PrideFest 2008 until the first weekend in October.

Capital City Pride would like to thank the entire Des Moines community for its support and understanding, and we look forward to celebrating with you in October.

For additional information about PrideFest 2008, visit www.capitalcitypride.org.

The Economics of Gay Marriage

Okay, I’ll be honest. I wasn’t overly excited about gay marriage until a couple of years ago. I was a strict follower of the counter-hegemonic mantra. In other words, mock the mainstream by rejecting its dominant cultural ethos (see Michael Warner’s book ‘The Trouble With Normal’). This worked really well while I was in school, as I didn’t live in the “normal” world anyway. I lived within the confines of a well-manicured university where one could win a Fulbright by writing a dissertation on the role of Marge Simpson’s blue hair on gender politics in the U.S. No wonder I was jealous of American Studies students. They were “required” to take cool classes and read “scholarly” articles about VH-1’s “Pop-Up Video.”

Fast forward to a couple of years later, and I’m entrenched in the real world, fixated on the economy and searching for a fuel-efficient sedan. I have a genuine fondness for tax deductions and low insurance premiums. I have come to feel boringly normal. And although I’m personally now very excited about the possibility of legalizing gay marriage in Iowa, I’m almost equally excited about the economic implications of gay marriage (hint, hint, Iowa!).

I myself think the government should allow for two consenting adults to get hitched if they so choose. I could present a plethora of reason why I’m for gay marriage, but I don’t think I’ll bore you with the heartfelt arguments that you may have already heard. Instead, I will finesse you with hard-core economic data as it relates to gay marriage in California. Ever the romantic, I refer you to a study by UCLA’s The Williams Project:

A Very Brief History of Pride

In case you were wondering why you’re seeing a few more rainbow flags than usual, June is Pride Month. And although we’re already in the last full week of June, I wanted to give everyone a chance to learn about the History of Pride Of course, we didn’t get to experience Des Moines Pride in all its glory earlier this month; we will, however, celebrate all things Pride in September. It’s kinda like “Christmas in July,” or I should say “Winter Festivities in July.”

Okay. To get back on track, here’s the very short history of Pride, compliments of Tennessee’s GLBT mediasource, Out and About Newspaper: http://outandaboutnewspaper.com/article.php?id=1518

Enjoy getting your ‘learn’ on!

P.S. Is anyone else a little surprised that Tennessee has a decent LGBT newspaper with rather sizeable staff? Maybe Nashville is the next San Fran…

The Gay Brain

Here is a link to… yep you guessed it… a recent study about gay brains that are structured like those of the opposite sex. Whenever I hear those famed words, “a recent study,” I think to myself, “here we go again.” Whether it be a recent study about the healthy benefits of broccoli or a recent study suggests that coffee is good for your heart, or another recent study that shows broccoli is linked to cancer. I have associated those words in a contradictory way. Yesterday when I heard about the recent coffee is good for your heart study, the reporter included that the study was not paid for by big coffee roasters. I thought that was an interesting way to put my skepticism to rest since the story included pictures from Starbucks, among other big coffee shops.

I did find the gay brain study rather intriguing. For me, being lesbian is like the color of my hair. I can try to change its color, but it always goes back to what it is naturally. I don’t really need a brain scan to tell me that this is biological, but if it helps us get to some scientific conclusion to prove this point, I’m all for it.
